The Trim Healthy Mama lifestyle is about smart glycemic living, meaning we eat to keep our blood sugar balanced. Keeping a balanced blood sugar is not just important for diabetics or pre-diabetics, but it is a key factor in weight management and healthy living.
All foods that are carbohydrates cause your blood sugar to raise, some more then others, simple carbs will cause a faster and higher spike then complex carbohydrates.
The modern diet is carbohydrate heavy causing blood sugar spikes and falls throughout the day. When your blood sugar spikes the pancreas need to send out more insulin to transport the glucose (blood sugar) to the cells in your body that need it for energy, when these cells are full if there is excess glucose it goes to fat cells. Muscle cells can only use so much and will not take more then they need, but fat cells will take all they can get, yes sugar turns into fat in the body.
An unbalanced blood sugar can be associated with insulin resistance, diabetes, Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menstrual irregularities and reduced fertility. Low Blood sugar can be linked to metabolism, thyroid and adrenal problems. High blood sugar has be linked to nerve damage, cardiovascular disease, kidney damage/failure, damage to blood vessels of the retina, bone/joint problems, and tooth/gum infections.
leaving out carbohydrates all together is not a good option as they are a great source of energy for the body, nourish your adrenals, and can be very slimming. A person just needs to be wise in which carbs to eat and how much. Complex carbohydrates enjoys in sensible amounts will keep your blood sugar leaves with in the safe range, which is 80-100. The Trim Healthy Mama guidelines for an E meal are designed to keep your leaves in a safe range while giving your body the carbs it craves and needs.
