Please don’t call Trim Healthy Mama (THM) a diet, it is a lifestyle. THM is for women, men and children of all ages and all life stages, meaning any one can follow the plan for a healthier life and weight loss. THM focuses on eating food in a way to balance your blood sugar.
Why do you need to balance your blood sugar you may ask. First unstable blood sugar swings can cause mood swings, anxiety, and leave you feeling hungry and tired. When the food you eat causes a blood sugar spike leaving your body with more glucose than your mussels can use it is stored in your fat cells. This means that excess blood sugar is turned into fat. Constantly spiking blood sugar levels can cause a wide range of health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, damage to your nerves, organs, or blood vessels, and fertility issues. This doesn't mean you should cut carbs out, they are important for your thyroid health, help elevate serotonin levels, and can be slimming. THM does not cut carbs but encourages blood sugar friendly carbs; these are your E fuels (energizing).
THM is not a low fat way of eating either, but uses healthy fats to fuel the body. These are S fuels (satisfying). When you are in weight loss mode you will want to keep your S and E fuels separated into different meals so your body only needs to burn though one fuel at a time. If you are at goal weight, a growing child, pregnant, nursing, wanting to gain weight, or need to slow weight loss you can enjoy your S and E’s together in what is called crossovers (XO). There is another food category for the foods that are low fat and low carb; these are fuel pulls (FP), and can be used in all settings.
Whether you are having an S, E, FP or XO meal or snack it will be centered around protein. Your body needs protein to repair your muscles, organs, bones, cartilage, and skin. Protein will also help balance your blood sugar and keep you feeling full between meals and snacks.
THM engerages healthy exercise in any way you enjoy it, but coucions about over doing the exercise. NO need to go spend hours at the gym unless that is something you enjoy. Taking a walk, playing ball with the kids, dancing, or short 20 minute workouts are a great way to incorporate healthy movement into your day.
These are just a quick overview of the basics of THM to help you get started.
